DIBRUGARH:

The owner of the ferry Ma Kamala, which capsized in the river Brahmaputra on September 8 leaving two persons dead and one missing, was arrested by Dibrugarh police after a week-long chase, on Monday.

"The owner of the boat, Pani Ram Kalita has been arrested by Dibrugarh Police, while he was trying to get admitted in a hospital (sic)," Assam special DGP, GP Singh said over a tweet, further adding that the follow-up investigation will be conducted by Jorhat Police CMO office, Assam.

The arrest of Kalita comes a day after Jorhat Police arrested six staffers of Inland Water Transport (IWT) in connection with the boat mishap in Brahmaputra River near Nimatighat, Jorhat.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who had earlier maintained that the completion of the Jorhat-Majuli Bridge could have everted the mishap, informed that the construction of the bridge will be completed within four years.

A bridge between Jorhat and Majuli over the river Brahmaputra is a long pending demand by the people of the area, and till date the construction has not started.
