DIBRUGARH:

Assam police recently busted a gang involved in the theft of crude oil from oil tankers belonging to Oil India Limited (OIL).

According to sources, Tinsukia police on July 30 arrested nine persons who were operating in Tinsukia for a long time.

An oil tanker with 30,000-kilolitre capacity bearing registration number HR-61 D-9677 was seized during the operation.

Speaking to mediapersons, Tinsukia SP Debojit Deuri said, “We have apprehended nine persons in connection with the crude oil stealing racket. All of them are security personnel at the oil collection centres. This racket has been operating for a long time in the upper Assam Tinsukia district”.

Deuri said, “Prima facie, it has come to light that there is a big nexus between locals and oil security personnel. The gang is involved in stealing crude oil from the oil collecting centres. They usually steal crude oil from underground pipelines, however, this gang stole directly from the collecting centre at Lankachi (Tinsukia).”

It may be noted most of the tankers usually stop at roadside dhabas (eateries) in the Moran-Sepon stretch on the NH-37 between Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts.
