DIBRUGARH:

The Jokai Reserve Forest, which is about 15 kilometres from Dibrigurah town, is in a state of neglect with unchecked tree felling in the area, and authorities not paying heed about it.

The reserve forest which covers an area of approximately 11,000 square meters is a rich treasure trove of various species of flora and fauna, including species that are nearly extinct now.

The North Eastern Council (NEC) had earlier sanctioned an amount of Rs 71.41 lakh for the construction of the boundary at Jokai Botanical garden-that lies amidst the reserve forest, but nothing has been done for the development of the reserve forest area.

According to sources, the funds allocated for the Jokia forest development work has been siphoned off by some corrupt officials.

Dhanti Saikia, a local resident of Jokai informed that illegal tree felling has been going on unchecked in the forest range, however, officials remain silent on the matter.

It was informed that the reserve forest like many other reserve forests, sanctuaries and national parks of the state is very poorly guarded in terms of manpower., with no boundaries around to prevent encroachment.
