GUWAHATI:

The Guwahati Police on Thursday seized over 2.5 kilograms of heroin worth over Rs 17.5 crore in the international market from an oil tanker in Jorabat on the outskirts of the city.

The police have arrested two persons – Dipak Sharma and Jamminlal from Nagaland and Manipur, respectively – from the vehicle.

According to the police, the drugs were packed in 205 soap cases and stashed inside the tanker. After receiving credible information that a big consignment of drugs is heading towards Guwahati, the police intercepted the vehicle in Jorabat and seized the heroin.

This is the third drug haul reported from Assam within the last few days and the biggest of them all. Lauding the police department’s efforts, Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Whatever means the drug mafia may choose to hoodwink police – they will never succeed.”

A case has been registered against the duo and the police are probing the matter for further leads.
