DIBRUGARH:

Assam power minister Bimal Borah on Monday said the state government will strongly deal with any power theft.

Addressing a press conference, Borah reiterated they would leave no stone unturned to fix the power department.

“Recently, the department launched a massive crackdown against alleged power theft in Jokai, Bongaon, Mohanaghat and Grambazar area in Dibrugarh and a fine was imposed on those who used illegal means,” Borah said.

Borah said, “If we need a 24-hour power supply, we have to stop power theft. Because of such practices, the power department has been facing enormous loss”.

He added, “The government is looking at amending the legislations relating to electricity consumers and bring in stringent provisions where big business houses and commercial establishments are involved”.

Recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said because of power theft and non-payment of electricity bills, the state power sector is losing around Rs 300 crore per month.
