DIBRUGARH:

The Assam government on Tuesday said that it will constitute an eight-member committee comprising of ministers and All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) members to create a roadmap for the implementation of the Assam Accord.

After the meeting, Minister Atul Bora said that the both sides have decided to form a committee and will meet again on Wednesday to finalise the formation of the panel. “While the CM will give names of the ministers, AASU will identify their members who will be a part of the committee,” said Bora.

AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that the Chief Minister will name three ministers out of the eight committee members and the rest will be decided by the students’ body. “We have discussed clause 6 of the Accord, and Sarma has assured the implementation of the same," he said.

In 1979, the students’ body had launched a six-year agitation demanding identification and deportation of illegal immigrants and it had culminated with the signing of the Assam Accord on August 15, 1985, in the presence of the then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The AASU and the people of Assam want a permanent solution to the problem of indigenous people, and the meeting discussed that in a cordial manner, Bhattacharya said.

AASU general secretary, Shankar Jyoti Baruah, vice president, Uddip Jyoti Gogoi, was among the others who led the delegation.
