Assam govt allocates portfolios to newly-inducted Cabinet Ministers

While Sarma will be holding crucial departments such as Home, Personnel, PWD (Public Works Department), three significant departments held by him in the previous government – Health and Family Welfare, Finance and Education – have been distributed among other Cabinet Ministers.

GUWAHATI:

The Assam government on Tuesday allocated portfolios to the newly inducted Ministers in the Cabinet led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

While Sarma will be holding crucial departments such as Home, Personnel, PWD (Public Works Department), three significant departments held by him in the previous government – Health and Family Welfare, Finance and Education – have been distributed among other Cabinet Ministers.

AGP leader and Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta has been given a heavy responsibility (given the critical COVID-19 situation in the state) to handle the Health and Family Welfare Department, along with Science and Technology and Information Technology Departments.

Former Minister in the erstwhile Congress government who joined the BJP ahead of the polls, Ajanta Neog has been allotted the Finance and Social Welfare Departments, while Dhemaji MLA and Cabinet Minister Ranuj Pegu has been given the responsibility to manage the Education and Welfare of the plain tribe and backward classes (non-BTC) departments.

On the other hand, AGP president and Cabinet Minister Atul Bora retained Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Departments he held in the previous term, while also being given the responsibility of the Border Area Development, implementation of Assam Accord and Cooperation Departments.

Likewise, Cabinet minister Parimal Suklabaidya retained the Environment and Forests, Fisheries and Excise Departments, while Cabinet Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary retained the Transport, Industries and Commerce and Skill Development Departments, while also being allotted the welfare of Minorities Department.

State BJP president and Cabinet Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass has been allotted Panchayat and Rural Development, Public Health Engineering, Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Departments, while UPPL leader and Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma has been allotted the Handloom and Textiles, Soil Conservation, Welfare of Plain Tribe and Backward classes (BTC) departments.

Former Minister of State (health) in the previous government who has now been elevated to the Cabinet rank, Pijush Hazarika has been allotted Water Resources, besides information and Public Relations and Parliamentary Affairs Departments.

Former minister, Sanjay Kishan has been allotted the welfare of Tea Tribes, Labour and Employment Departments while another former minister, Jogen Mohan has been asked to handle the Revenue and Disaster Management, Hills Area Development, Mines and Minerals.

Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal has also been allotted key portfolios such as the Guwahati Development, Urban Development and Irrigation Departments, while Tingkhong legislator Bimal Bora has been allotted Sports and Youth Welfare, Cultural Affairs, Power and Tourism Departments.
