GUWAHATI:

Guwahati Police, on December 16, arrested former Assam Cricket Association (ACA) secretary Pradip Buragohain on charges of misusing the association’s funds during his tenure.

Buragohain was arrested from Tingkhang in Dibrugarh based on a FIR lodged by ACA chief executive officer (CEO) Pritam Mahanta alleging that the former ACA secretary had misused funds to the tune of Rs 50 crore during his tenure.

He was taken into custody by the team of Fatasil Police in connection with case no 817/2021 under section 120 (B)/406/409/420/469/34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) registered at Fatasil Police station in Guwahati.

A senior police official said the corruption case will expose more names involved in the misappropriation case.

The ACA had earlier constituted a five-member accounts verification committee headed by veteran sports organiser Jamshed Khan to scrutinize the accounts to ascertain the allegations of corruption in the account maintained by the former ACA committee.

The ACA sought an explanation from Buragohain following the report by the accounts verification committee and asked him to appear before the apex council to clarify his views.

After which the former secretary appeared before the council and clarified his views on the alleged financial irregularities. However, the apex council was not satisfied with Buragohain's clarification.
