Assam: Elderly man crushed to death by wild elephant in Digboi

On July 14, Environment and Forests Minister Parimal Suklabaidya informed that over 800 people had lost their lives to human-elephant conflict in Assam during the last 10 years and that several measures were being taken to mitigate such conflicts.

GUWAHATI:

An elderly man was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Durgabari of Digboi range under Digboi Forest Division in the early hours of Wednesday, an official informed.

The deceased, identified as Chitranjan Chakraborty was 71 years old.

Upon learning about the incident, Forest Department personnel hurried to the site and conducted necessary formalities and informed that a detailed report of the incident will be submitted soon.

The official said that a compensation of Rs 4 lakh will be given to the next of kin of the victim by the Environment and Forest Department after receipt of the post-mortem report and other documents.
