GUWAHATI:

The Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has ordered the closure of all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, universities and hostels in the district until May 11.

The order comes amid a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases. The district surpassed the 1,000-mark in daily COVID-19 cases and recorded 1,153 COVID infections on Monday.

“As active COVID–19 cases have crossed the 1000-mark, all educational institutions (government and non-government) including colleges, universities, coaching institutes and all category of students’ hostels are hereby declared closed with effect from April 27, 2021, to May 11, 2021,” the order read.

“However, online classes have to be made available for the concerned students,” the order read.

Earlier, state education and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that deputy commissioners in all districts had been authorised to close educational institutions and students’ hostels if the daily COVID-19 caseload surpassed the 1000-mark.
