Assam: Drug trafficker injured in a clash with police in Karimganj

In a drug bust in Assam's Karimganj district, a group of drug suppliers allegedly attacked police on Saturday, officials said.

According to sources, the drug traffickers tried to snatch the guns from the police which forced the cops to fire bullets on the drug suppliers in defence resulting in severe injury in the lower body of one of the peddlers.

The drug supplier who has been shot by the Karimganj Police is identified as Kawosar Ahmed and is currently undergoing treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Padmanabh Baruah informed that cases will be registered against the person once he recovers from the injuries and gets discharged from the hospital.

The incident took place in Patharkandi area of Karimganj district at around 5:30 pm on Saturday.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Padmanabh Baruah officer said that initially there were four drug peddlers who attacked the police officials but later two more joined them.

"One of them tried to snatch a gun from a police official and in defence, other officials had to open fire at the drug peddler. Rest five peddlers immediately ran away and managed to escape," he said.

Police officials have recovered 72 grams of suspected brown sugar from one person and said that there was a possibility that more amount of drugs were available with the peddlers who escaped.
