Assam: Contraband worth over Rs 5 lakh seized in Dibrugarh, four held

DIBRUGARH:

A combined team of Duliajan police and Tinsukia police on Tuesday conducted a raid at Digboi area and seized a huge haul of drugs, besides arresting four persons including a woman.

The persons arrested after the raid were identified as Biju Gur (24), Savita Balmiki (23), Santanu Bora (25) and Papu Ali (19).

Police recovered 25 kg of ganja (Cannabis) and heroin worth over lakhs from their possession. The contraband substances were kept sealed in small 97 packets.

"We have also seized a car bearing registration no (ML 210B 8104) and four mobile sets from their possession. We have started our investigation and sent the drug peddlers at Dibrugarh jail," said a police official.

The market value of contraband substances are valued to be worth over Rs 5 lakh, police sources informed.

In another similar crackdown on the same day, Tinsukia police seized 1 kg Opium from the Philobari area of Tinsukia district on Tuesday.

Talking to this Correspondent over the phone, Tinsukia SP Debojit Deori said, "War on Drugs will continue across the region. Today, in two separate incidents, a huge haul of narcotic substances were seized from the Digboi and Philobari areas under the Tinsukia district. Our crackdown against drugs will continue."

The SP further added that Opium cultivation is centred around an area called the 'Golden Triangle' and the cultivation spreads across 5000 sq km in the region. 

The Opium trade is a lucrative business, the cultivators are spread across Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the Northeast, he added.
