Assam CM unveils statue of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee at Barpeta road

Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said Dr Mookerjee was a great lover of Assam, who introduced the study of Assamese language at Calcutta University, where he also served as a vice-chancellor.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Tuesday, unveiled the statue of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee at Barpeta Road.

Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said Dr Mukherjee was a great lover of Assam, who introduced the study of Assamese language at Calcutta University, where he also served as a vice-chancellor.

"Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee travelled to Assam and advocated the Assamese language to be the official language of the state, and urged every resident of Assam to learn the Assamese language," Sarma said.

"In 1935, Calcutta University introduced Assamese as a modern language and Birinchi Kumar Baru, the first Assamese was appointed as a teacher at Calcutta University. Dr Mukherjee, the then vice-chancellor of Calcutta University advocated the name of Birinchi Kumar Barua as the teacher at Calcutta University," Sarma added.

Dr Mukherjee was the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangha, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1951.
