Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is on a two-day visit to Silchar, announced several developmental schemes in the field of health and tourism in the city, on Monday.

"We will launch several developmental schemes in Silchar. The government is planning to revamp Khaspur, a popular tourist destination in the town, on the lines of Kalakshetra in Guwahati," said Sarma, adding that Rs 10 crore will be allocated to give historic Bhavan Tirtha Vikas a facelift as well.

Apart from developing Khaspur, the construction of the 500-bed Silchar Medical College Hospital (SMCH) will be completed in the next two years, along with a cancer hospital at SMCH, by 2022, said Sarma.

Giving details about investments in various sectors, Sarma said that an amount of Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned for setting up offices under the deputy commissioner. In this regard, Sarma said that the deputy commissioner of Cachar has been instructed to scout for suitable land for the same in 10 days.

Speaking about the mini secretariat, for which the government had sanctioned Rs 116 crore earlier, the chief minister said that the work on it will expedite after Durga Puja and it will be completed in the next two years.

Besides the above projects, the Assam government is also planning to shift the Silchar Central Jail to Lakshmipur area, he said.
