DIBRUGARH:

Rescue personnel recovered the bodies of three teenagers from the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati’s Pandu Ghat, on Sunday.

Four teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and river police were tasked with finding the bodies of four teenagers who reportedly drowned in the river near Pandu Ghat on September 26.

The recovered bodies have been identified as those of Dayal Sheikh, Avinash Das and Jeet Das, all students of Class 10 in Vidya Mandir School and were under 16 years of age.

While the remains of the deceased have been sent for postmortem, search and rescue operations are still underway to find the fourth victim, Deep Sarkar, said a police official.

The boys, who decided to take a dip in the river before returning home from tuition classes, had left their personal belongings, including mobile phones, by the bank, which were later found by rescue personnel.

Eyewitnesses report that the teenagers were last seen taking photographs and shooting videos, likely for uploading on social media, before they entered the waters.

The Brahmaputra River has swollen this time of the year, said an official, warning parents to discourage their children from swimming in it lest strong currents overpower them.
