Assam Assembly Elections 2021: Second phase polling begins

Polling for the second phase of the Assam Assembly elections began at 7:00 am on Thursday.

As voters queued up to the booths from the early hours, polling across the 39 Legislative Assembly constituencies in Central Assam began amid strict COVID protocols.

Altogether, 73,44,631 general electors and 17,164 service voters will exercise their democratic rights across 10,592 polling stations in 14 election districts across Central Assam, including four seats in Bodoland Territorial Region, two hill districts, and Barak Valley.

Phase two features Hojai LAC as the seat having the highest number of electors with 373 polling stations and 2,65,886 electors.

According to the Election Commission of India, as many as 345 candidates, including 26 women, are in the fray, out of which 176 are independent candidates.

We may note that the BJP and Congress are contesting in 34 and 28 seats, respectively, with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP, contesting in six.
Besides this, the recently formed Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) is contesting in 19 seats.
