Assam: 30 air travellers test Covid positive at Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport

Amid growing concerns over the new Covid variant, “Omicron”, 30 air passengers tested positive for Covid-19 at Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here, a senior official of the airport said on January 4.

Of them 19 passengers tested positive on Monday while 11 others were found positive on Tuesday, the official said.

Most of the passengers are domestic travellers and they may not have international travel history, he said.

On December 6, 2021, the Assam government had issued fresh guidelines, including a mandatory RT-PCR test on arrival for international travellers.

The administration has released the fresh Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that mandates 7-day compulsory home quarantine for those who test negative for the Covid infection. However, children below five years of age have been exempted from the test.

Passengers in possession of final Covid vaccination certificate (two doses complete) shall be exempted from on arrival testing procedures.

The state’s overall positivity rate has gone up from 0.96% on Monday to 1,20 per cent on Tuesday.

A total of 475 individuals tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday, according to a bulletin of the National Health Mission (NHM). 

Of them, 190 cases have been reported from Kamrup metropolitan district.The state also recorded three death cases on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the campaign for vaccination of children of 15-19 age groups is going in full swing across the state.

On day two, a total of 1,13,164 teenagers have been administered the first dose of Covaxin, at 1,877 Covid-19 Vaccination Centres (CVCs). 

The state health department is planning to complete the first dose for all children in this age group by January 9, and start another vaccination drive for healthcare workers, frontline workers, and citizens above 60 years of age from January 10.
