Assam activist Akhil Gogoi takes oath as Sibsagar MLA

In the Assembly Elections held in March 2021, Gogoi defeated Surabhi Rajkonwari of the BJP by 11,875 votes and claimed victory over the Sibsagar seat.

Jailed anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) activist and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has taken oath as MLA of Sibsagar at the ongoing session of the new Assam legislative assembly held on Friday at 9:30 am. 

According to sources, the oath was administered by pro-tem speaker Phani Bhushan Choudhury.

"My voice for Assamese nationalism can never be muted and (I will) ensure uninterrupted development of Sibsagar constituency in the coming years," Akhil Gogoi said, as per the reports. 

The 46-year-old has been under judicial custody since 2019. Gogoi was arrested on the charges of sedition and inciting violence during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam.

Earlier, Akhil Gogoi was granted permission by a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Guwahati to take the oath.
