NEW DELHI:

With 74 goals in international football, Captain of the Indian football team Sunil Chhetri has overtaken Lionel Messi to become the second-highest active international goalscorer.

Chhetri scored two goals against Bangladesh on Monday in the FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, to edge past Messi's tally of international goals.

He has now scored two more goals than Messi, who is ranked third in the list.

Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo with 103 goals is on top of the list with most international goals.

The Indian captain is also just one goal away from entering the rank of all-time top-10 goal scorers in football. He is behind Hungary's Sandor Kocsis, Japan's Kunishige Kamamoto, and Kuwait's Bashar Abdullah, who all have 75 goals.

India will play their next match against Afghanistan on June 15, where Chhetri will try to score more goals to enter the list of top-10 highest goalscorers of all time.
