Polling for the eighth and final phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections began at 7:00 am on Thursday, amid the rampaging second wave of COVID-19.


Six seats in Malda, 11 each in Murshidabad and Birbhum, and seven seats in Kolkata are in the fray as polling kicked off across 11,860 centres. Over 84.77 lakh voters will decide the political fate of 283 candidates, 35 of whom are women.


The Election Commission also informed that all precautionary measures are in place, given the nationwide spike in COVID-19 cases.


The state registered its highest single-day spike of 17,207 on Wednesday, with 77 more succumbing to the disease.


The counting of votes will be on May 2, along with Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Puducherry.
