NEW DELHI:

The National Fact Sheet Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted by the Union Health Ministry has revealed that tobacco consumption among school-going children (aged between 13-15) is highest in Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

A total of 97,302 students from 987 schools participated in the survey, of which 80,772 students, aged 13-15 years, were considered for reporting. Findings from the survey also revealed that that nearly one-fifth of the students aged 13-15 years used some or the other form of tobacco products in their life.

According to the survey, both Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram account for 53 per cent of the total tobacco consumption in the country among school-going children, which has once again put the Northeastern states in the limelight for all the wrong reasons.

Presiding over the release of the survey, Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, underlined the role of teachers and parents as most crucial in creating awareness among children about the harmful effects of tobacco use and inculcate the right attitude in this regard.

Releasing the National Fact Sheet, he said, "The more and the sooner we create awareness among children about harms due to tobacco use, the better will be the outcomes in terms of reduction in the prevalence of tobacco use among children, and consequently among adults."
