Over 126 athletes to head to Tokyo Olympics from India, PM to interact virtually

The PM had recently reviewed the preparations for the facilitation of India’s contingent at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Union Sports Ministry, on Sunday, informed that a total of 126 athletes across 18 sports disciplines from India will be heading to Tokyo for the Olympic games.


The 69 cumulative events across the 18 sport disciplines that India will participate in is the highest ever for the country.


The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 till August 8.


Meanwhile, it has been informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Indian athletes' contingent bound for Tokyo Olympics on July 13 at 5 PM, through a video conference.


The interaction by the Prime Minister is an endeavour to motivate the athletes ahead of their participation at the games. 


The PM had recently reviewed the preparations for the facilitation of India’s contingent at the Tokyo Olympics. 


He had also discussed the inspirational journeys of some of the athletes on Mann Ki Baat, besides urging the nation to come forward and wholeheartedly support them.


It may be mentioned that there are several notable firsts in terms of participation. 


For the first time in Indian history, fencer Bhavani Devi and first-ever female sailor Nethra Kumanan have qualified for the Olympic games. Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj are the first swimmers to qualify for an Olympic Games by achieving the ‘A’ Qualification Standard in Swimming.


The virtual meeting will be attended by the Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports Anurag Thakur, Minister of States Youth Affairs and Sports Nisith Pramanik and Law Minister Kiren Rijiju.
