GUWAHATI:

The Narendra Modi-expanded cabinet will see five representatives from the Northeast as the new members will likely take oath as ministers on Wednesday evening.

According to the list, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports Kiren Rijiju will require to take oath again as he is set to assume a new office.

Former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will return to the Union Cabinet. Sonowal had served as the Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs from 2014 to 2016.

Minister of State (MoS) Food Processing  Rameshwar Teli from Assam will retain his office.

The new faces inducted in the new cabinet include -- Member of Parliament from Manipur Dr R. Ranjan Singh and Member of Parliament from Tripura Pratima Bhowmik.

Bhowmik is the first-ever union minister from the state of Tripura and the second woman from the Northeast to get a union berth. The first woman from the Northeast to get a cabinet berth was Agatha Sangma, an MP from Tura in Meghalaya.

According to reports, with the induction of the five ministers, this will be the highest ever representation from the Northeast since independence.

"The new cabinet will be one of the most inclusive with a record representation of SC, ST Members," sources informed.

However, it needs to be seen as to what portfolio the new faces would get in the expanded cabinet and if at all, they get important berths.

Along with the five members, 39 others will also be sworn in as cabinet ministers.
