Lovlina Borgohain dedicates medal to country after Olympic victory

The 23-year-old pugilist from Golaghat district of Assam became the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and Mary Kom to win an Olympic medal. She also became the first person from Assam to secure an Olympic medal.

Olympian Lovlina Borgohain of Assam, who made India proud after winning bronze in the welterweight women's boxing at the Tokyo Olympics has dedicated her medal to the country. 

 The 23-year-old pugilist from Golaghat district of Assam became the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh and Mary Kom to win an Olympic medal. She also became the first person from Assam to secure an Olympic medal.

 "I am grateful to everyone for your love and support ... My family has played a pivotal role in my success. They were there with me during thick and thin, especially my mother who motivated me a lot during her illness. Jai Hind," Lovlina tweeted on Wednesday. 

 "Finally, my years of preparation have yielded me an Olympic medal. Although I was aiming for Gold, there's always a next time and hopefully in the 2024 Paris Olympics. I thank my entire nation for their prayers and wishes and also dedicate this medal to my country," she added. 

 She also extended her gratitude to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), ministry of sports, Sports Authority of India, TOPS, OGQ, Assam government, her coaches, IOS sports and boxing fraternity for their support. 

 A celebratory mood filled the air in Assam, especially Lovlina's hometown, Borpothar, as people rejoiced and celebrated the Indian's boxer victory in the Olympics. 

 Meanwhile, congratulations poured in from across the country that included tweets from President Ramnath Kovind, many politicians and sportspersons. 

 President Ramnath Kovind tweeted, "Congratulations to Lovlina Borgohain! With your hard work and dogged determination, you have done the nation proud. Your Bronze medal in boxing at the Olympics Games will inspire the youth, especially young women, to battle with challenges and turn their dreams into reality."

 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, "Proud of you @LovlinaBorgohai  - Assam’s daughter & India’s pride. It’s a special day as you have scripted a rare history getting Assam an #Olympics medal for the first time ever. We cheer, celebrate and salute you. You are our SUPER WINNER Lovlina." 

 Former Indian opener batsman Virender Sehwag tweeted, "Brilliant Lovlina ! Just the third ever Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal. Congratulations #LovlinaBorgohain on winning the bronze. #Tokyo2020,".

 Lovlina Borgohain lost in the semi-final bout against Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the welterweight women's boxing at the Tokyo Olympics.
