Bill to repeal Farm Laws passed in Parliament

The Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021 was passed by the Rajya Sabha, amid heavy sloganeering by the opposition on the grounds that the matter should have been discussed before being passed.

The three bills are the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020.

Opposition members raised slogans, immediately after the Union Agriculture Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar presented the Bill.

Speaker Om Birla put the Bill for a voice vote and cleared it within seconds. He further stated that discussions will begin "once the members behave and stop sloganeering". The Opposition members refused to back down.

Following this, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm.

Tomar moved the motion in the Rajya Sabha once it assembled at 2 pm.

Congress leaders like Supriya Sule and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury referred to the move as a black day for democracy.

Rakesh Tikait, a prominent member of the farmers’ agitation, said that they will not leave the site until the Minimum Support Price (MSP) is discussed, among others.

Countering their allegations, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi praised the Prime Minister, appealing to the Opposition for their cooperation in getting the laws repealed.

BJP leader, Ashwini Choubey, accused the Opposition of being disruptive.
