NEW DELHI:

The Union Government has included fisheries and aquaculture activities including animal husbandry under essential activities and has exempted all such activities from the purview of the current lockdown or similar restrictions.

The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying has urged all the states to allow the operation of all these activities with immediate effect.

"Since fisheries and aquaculture activities involve dealing with live animals and the husbandry practices of aquatic animals, they require regular care such as management of water quality and feeding. Therefore, the situation demands that activities of fisheries and aquaculture operation including management and maintenance of aquarium besides transport of feed, seed and food fishes are treated as essential services and accordingly be exempted from the current lockdown or similar restrictions," read an order from the union ministry.

The order further stated that fisheries and aquaculture activities were exempted from the lockdown and included in essential services during the nationwide lockdown implemented last year, and so the operation of these activities could continue following the COVID-19 pandemic guidelines.

Further, States and Union Territories under lockdown/restrictions have to allow movement of fish and fisheries products, fish seed and fish feed for the fish farmers/fishers, aquaculture farms and other commercial establishments like aquarium shops etc, as a large number of people depend on this sector for livelihood sustenance, the release stated.
