Assam’s Shiva Thapa bags fifth medal at Asian Boxing Championships

Thapa becomes the only male Indian boxer in history to win his fifth medal at the Asian Boxing Championships.

GUWAHATI:

Assam pugilist Shiva Thapa bagged the silver medal after going down by 2-3 split to Asian Games silver medallist Baatarsukh Chinzorig from Mongolia in the men’s 64kg final at the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships in Dubai on Monday.

 

With this accomplishment, Thapa becomes the only male Indian boxer in history to win his fifth medal at the Asian Boxing Championships.

 

The 27-year-old boxer from Guwahati previously won gold while making his debut in Asian boxing in 2013, silver in 2017 and two bronze in 2015 and 2019.

 

Lauding his achievement, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to congratulate Thapa saying, “Punch of pride! Heartiest congratulations to Shiva Thapa on bagging the silver medal at the Asian Boxing Championships. We are all very proud of your excelling in the rings, and certain that this is one among the many more glories that shall follow. May you continue to shine.”


 

Meanwhile, bringing more laurels to Assam, Lovlina Borgohain bagged the bronze in the 69 kg women’s welterweight category.

 

The chief minister, while lauding her feat, said, “A great day for us as Assam’s Lovlina Borgohain brings us glory in the form of a bronze in 69 kg welterweight at the Asian Boxing Championships. Our heartiest congratulations to you on this feat. With your determination, you shall only soar higher.”
