NEW DELHI:

After the Supreme Court passed the judgement of granting Permanent Commission (PC) to women officers in the Indian Army, 147 new women officers have been commissioned into the Indian Army as officers.

With the latest induction, the total number of women officers with PC now stands at 424 out of the 615 considered, stated the Defence Ministry over a press release.

After the apex court's judgment, a Special Number 5 Selection Board for screening women officers for grant of PC was constituted in September 2020. The board's results were declared in November 2020.

The Supreme Court in March 2021 issued a list of parameters to re-consider some cases of women officers who were not granted PC.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, all women officers granted PC would undergo special training courses and challenging military assignments for higher leadership roles in the Indian Army.

A batch of 33 Women Officers successfully completed the Mid Level Tactical Orientation Course from Army War College at Mhow recently, the release mentioned.

Further, all women officers who were considered in this Special Number 5 Selection Board and not granted PC, will yet be eligible for pension subject to serving for a minimum of 20 years in service.

Granting PC to women in the Army is aimed towards gender parity and also to empower them with challenging roles akin to their male counterparts, said the Defence Ministry.
