There is a saying — Age doesn't matter. Well the adage fits in well in Indian politics because you can be 25 years of age and can lead the state as its Chief Minister.

Well, one of the principle qualifications set by the Constitution of India to be eligible to the office of a Chief Minister is "age". A citizen of India must be 25 years of age or more to become a CM, besides being a member of a state legislature. 

In Northeast India, we have chief ministers ranging from the age of 39 till 76 years. Let us find out who is the oldest and youngest chief minister in Northeast.

Know your chief minister:

 1. Assam:

Sarbananda Sonowal: The chief minister of Assam, who represents Majuli constituency, is 56 years old. And no, he is not the oldest CM. Sonowal is a Graduate professional. He joined politics in the early 2000s. Prior to that, he was the President of Assam's oldest student body, the All Assam Students Union from 1992 to 1999.

Arunachal Pradesh: 

Pema Khandu: The chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh is the youngest CM not only in Northeast but in India as well. The richest chief minister in Northeast is 39 years old.  Khandu, who represents Mukto constituency, is a Graduate. He joined politics in the early 2000s.

Meghalaya: 

Conrad K Sangma: The chief minister of Meghalaya, who represents South Tura constituency, is the second youngest CM in Northeast. He is 40 years of age. He is a Post Graduate. Sangma comes from a family of politicians. Following in his late father's footsteps, Conrad joined politics in the late 1990s, as the campaign manager for his father, (L) PA Sangma.

Nagaland: 

Neiphiu Rio: The chief minister of Nagaland, who represents Northern Angami II constituency, is 67 years old. He is one of the oldest serving CMs in Northeast. Rio entered politics at a very young age in the late 1970s.

Tripura: 

Biplab Kumar Deb: The BJP leader and chief minister of Tripura, who  represents Banamalipur constituency (West Tripura), is 46 years of old. He joined politics in the 1990s.

Manipur: 

N Biren Singh: The chief minister of Manipur, who represents Heingang constituency, is also one of the oldest CMs of Northeast India. He is 57 years old. Singh began his career as a footballer and got recruited in the Border Security Force (BSF). He resigned from the BSF and turned to journalism. he joined politics in 2002.

Mizoram: 

Lal Thanhawla: And we have the oldest chief minister in Northeast and it is none other than the CM of Mizoram. Thanhawla, who represents Serchhip constituency, is 76 years old. The five-time CM of Mizoram. He joined politics in the late 1960s.

Sikkim: 

Pawan Chamling: The longest serving chief minister in India with the highest educational qualifications amongst CMs of Northeast, Pawan Chamling is also one of the oldest CMs of the region. He is 66 years old. He is also a Nepali language writer and recipient of the Bhanu Puraskar (2010) awarded by Sikkim Sahitya Parishad. He joined politics in the late 1970s.
