Shillong Turmoil: Megh Govt meets Church leaders; seeks latter’s cooperation

The Meghalaya government on Tuesday convened a meeting with religious leaders from various denominations to seek their cooperation in the attempt to bring back peace and normalcy in Shillong city.

"The main idea of reaching out to the church leaders is to gather everybody's support to defuse the situation. We want the religious leaders to pray for our State so that peace can comeback in our State," Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told media persons after the meeting with the religious leaders here today.

Informing that the religious leaders were very supportive to the Government's plea, he said that they would like to involve all sections of the society not only now but even in the future for different issues and different problems which the State is facing.

He also said that the church leaders have appreciated the efforts of the State Government to ensure maximum restraint to prevent casualties of the citizens.

He said that the church leaders urged upon the Government that even in the future, this kind of peace should prevail.

Sangma said that they have also suggested that different societies and groups should be consulted in whatever work the Government is doing.

"We are looking to work with the church leaders and different groups of societies and to cooperate with them even in the future," Chief Minister added.
