From Our Correspondent, TNT News  | Tura, June 27, 2018:

A new twist has emerged in the Phulbari rape case in Meghalaya where it was suggested that the alleged rapist, who till yesterday was thought to be a 17-yr-old teen, is not a minor as had been projected by his family.

The alleged rapist of a 7 year old girl from the village of Kaimbatapara – II under Phulbari is said to be over 20 and  also has a
voter ID which shows him as such. According to the electoral roll, the age of the suspect was 20 when the electoral roll was made.

The suspect had allegedly carried the 7 year old to his house on the evening of June 23 and sexually assaulted the minor, even while people were in the same house. He absconded immediately after the crime and only surrendered to police in Phulbari yesterday, possibly in the hope that he would be tried under the JJB.

"It seems they are trying to lower his age to that of a juvenile to escape severe punishment that is due to him for his crime. The people involved in this should be found out and they too should be prosecuted for falsifying his age," said one of the locals when contacted.

The case was likely to go to the Juvenile Justice Board, but will most likely move after the revelation of the new information.
