The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) on Tuesday celebrated the birthday of the Congress president, Rahul Gandhi through various programmes that were held in Tura throughout the day.

A marathon titled 'Save India Run' was held on Tuesday and saw the participation of 224 people of whom 129 participants finished the race. "Save India Run" was organized to highlight anti-constitutional events taking place in the country and also to encourage the youth to take part in nation building.

The marathon was flagged off by MPYC president Richard Marak and saw the presence of IYC secretary i/c Meghalaya, Sarifa Rahman at the prize distribution ceremony.

A function was organized at Congress Bhawan, Tura to commemorate the birthday of Rahul Gandhi which saw members of the DCC and Mahil Congress also come together. Dignitaries present during the function were Zenith Sangma, Lazarus M Sangma, Sarifa Rahman, Noverfield Marak, Stevie M Marak, and other leaders from all three organizations.

A protest rally was also held immediately after the function and was led by the MPYC and moved through from Congress Bhawan to the main Bazaar area, moving through Hawakhana before ending at Congress Bhawan.

The rally was organized to protest issues of rising unemployment, price rise, farmers' distress, atrocities against Dalits and women against Modi Government. It is a part of the 'Bharat Bachao Jan Andolan' – a nation wide movement by the Indian Youth Congress to expose grave failures of the current NDA government on all platforms of developmental policies.

The protesters pledged to protect the lives of common people of India who are being consistently discriminated against and whose rights are continuously being violated. They pledged to continue the struggle till the present inhuman political regime is uprooted in 2019 Loksabha elections.

During the brief stop at Tura Bazar, Zenith, Lazarus Sangma and Richard Marak spoke of the alleged false promises and propaganda of the BJP led NDA government of which NPP is also a part of. The leaders blamed the MDA government of being anti people.

"All the promises of Modi's government are blatant lies. Continued rise of prices of almost all essential commodities has crippled the life of an average Indian," said Marak who also called the GST implementation as ill-planned and mismanaged.

"Fuel prices are at historic highest levels leaving no stone unturned raising the prices of essential commodities. Welfare policies have seldom been implemented by Modi government. It is instead implementing policies which are a concerted attack on the lives of farmers, Dalits and women. This is leading to alienation of these sections of society from the mainstream," he added.

The MPYC president further added that representatives of the ruling party have been reported and booked for exploiting farmers, dalits and women.

"People now have nothing but to save their lives from being abused by the exploitative character of this government which has completely lost its sense of humanity," alleged Marak.
