Meghalaya: Man rescues tourists from Nagaland; drowns in Umngot river at Shnongpdeng

A man, who worked as a boatman at Shnongpdeng drowned in the Umngot river at East Jaintia Hills on Saturday after having rescued four tourists from drowning.

The deceased has been identified as Spain Lamain, 38 who hails from a village under the Amlarem sub-division. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon when Lamain took four tourists from Nagaland on a boat ride. However, the water levels started to rise which caused the boat to overturn.

Lamain jumped into the water to rescue the tourists, having been able to save all of them  from drowning. Unfortunately, Lamain drowned and his body was not found until a report about the incident was filed. It was said that all four tourists had life jackets on except for the deceased.

Immediately after the incident, a search operation was started by the entire village and the police.
