Assam: ‘Moral police’ thrash and fine couple in viral video

GUWAHATI, June 22, 2018: Police on Thursday initiated a suo-moto caseagainst a group of people who, in an apparent act of moral policing, pulled down a young couple from their motorbike and thrashed them in public in Assam's Goalpara district.

The incident happened on June 17. The video of the incident that happened on June 17, showing a group of people caning the couple, both in their twenties, went viral on social media on Thursday morning. "Soon after, a member of the Kherupara defence committee, Qurban Ali, was arrested. We're looking for three others involved in the assault. We can't make their names public until we catch them," a senior police officer said.
