GUWAHATI, June 23, 2018: In a shocking incident that took place in the city on Wednesday, a man committed suicide a day after his minor daughter was allegedly raped in lower Assam's Dhubri district.

Locals said the girl, a class VII student, was allegedly kidnapped by Ajijul Houqe, 25, a resident of the same village under Bilasipara subdivision, while returning from school and he raped her repeatedly.

The girl, flanked by villagers, told reporters, who reached the spot after getting the news, that the accused, after kidnapping her, took her to Koimari, a hilly area bordering Kokrajhar district, where he raped her and in the evening took her to Hajaripara in Bilasipara where he repeated the crime.

But she managed to flee taking advantage of darkness. On returning home, she told her family about the incident.

A villager said when the girl's father, 55, came to know about the incident, he was shocked and out of shame committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his house on Thursday. The girl's family members comprise her mother, two elder sisters and a younger brother.

Police said a case under relevant sections of the IPC had been lodged at Kokrajhar police station and a hunt for the accused launched.

Students' organisations, including the All Bodo Minority Students' Union and the All Assam Minorities Students' Union, have demanded the arrest of and capital punishment to the accused.
