The court of additional district and sessions judge N. Senabaya Deori gave the death sentence and slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on Mainul Hoque, 41.

The court showed some leniency to Salim Uddin, 32, in view of the fact that he had opposed raping the victim while she was unconscious and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 30,000.

The victim, an assistant teacher in a primary school at Jamunamukh in Hojai district, 150km from Guwahati, was on her way home from school when the two carpenters raped and killed her. They then threw her body into the Kolong river, the police said.

A police source in Hojai said, "The police got details of the crime from three schoolchildren who were following their teacher back home that day".

The murder of the teacher, who hailed from Kampur in adjoining Nagaon district, had triggered an uproar with thousands of people taking to the streets on June 1, 2017, demanding capital punishment to the culprits.
