MAJULI, June 22, 2018: About 85 people, including 35 children, fell ill after consuming food at a birthday party in Upper Assam's Majuli district on Wednesday night.

When contacted, Majuli deputy commissioner Deba Prasad Mishra and superintendent of police Hitesh Ray said the incident took place at the birthday party of one Prasanta Pegu's daughter at Muabari village under Jengerai police station in upper Majuli.

After the people complained of stomach ache and vomiting, they were rushed to nearby Nayabazar hospital but had to be shifted to Pitambar Deva Goswami civil hospital in Garmur after their condition deteriorated.

The superintendent of the Garmur hospital, Manik Mili, said most of the people were released after primary treatment but 28 "critically ill" patients were still undergoing treatment. They are, however, "out of danger", he added.

Mishra said, "We are monitoring the situation. Investigations are on. The family members of the house where the incident took place are also undergoing treatment."

Sources, however, said at least 150 people had fallen ill.
