As Northeast India continues to vehemently oppose the passage of Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016, prominent BJP leader from Tripura Rajeshwar Debbarma has quit the party over the contentious Bill.

In his letter of resignation, he stated that the "BJP led NDA government had shown its real face of racial discrimination and ill attitude to the indigenous people of Tripura as a whole by means of passing the the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha".

He also cited the January 8 Tripura unrest as one of the reasons for resigning from the party while adding that he was unhappy with the performance of the present government who had failed to protect the lives of indigenous people of the state.

"I cannot keep silent on the Citizenship Bill issue because for me my people and my state come before any position in the government…" he added.

It must be recalled that the Asom Gana Parishad has also withdrawn its alliance from the BJP on the same issue earlier this month.
