AGARTALA:

In the last one year, 208 intruders have been detained by the Border Security Force (BSF) Tripura Frontier and have seized contraband worth Rs 31. 27 crore along the Indo-Bangladesh border in the state, informed the BSF, on November 30.

Elaborating on the data, BSF Inspector General (IG), Sushant Kumar Nath said, “BSF Tripura has intercepted and detained these intruders while attempting to cross the international border. Out of the 208 arrested persons, 115 are Indian and 93 are Bangladeshi nationals.”

He also said that the confiscated contrabands include Yaba tablets, ganja (marijuana), cough syrups, and other drugs.

“Despite facing challenges like adverse climatic conditions, remote and inhospitable topography, and malaria, BSF Tripura Frontier guards 856 km of the international border in the state. We are successful in maintaining a strict vigilance where trans-border crimes are concerned. These include smuggling of narcotics and cattle,” Nath said.

Praising the BSF’s relentless efforts to contain insurgency in the state, Nath said that, between October-November 2021, two senior active militants of the banned outfit, National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT-BM) - Jaiba Kalai (self-styled Lieutenant) and Rana Bahadur Debbarma (self-styled, Captain) – surrendered in Tripura, which is a success for BSF Tripura Frontier’s counterinsurgency campaigns.

“We have been taking steps to contain insurgency in Tripura both independently and in close coordination with other security agencies deployed in the state,” he said, adding that over the past few years, 25 NLFT members have left the outfit to join the mainstream.
