TNT-The Northeast Today brings you a few facts you should know about former insurgent leader-turned Assam politician Hagrama Mohilary.

According to official records, Hagrama Mohilary was born in a Boro family on March 1, 1969, in Kokrajhar, Deborgaon. He has two elder sisters and four elder brothers. He did his schooling in Deborgaon H.S school.

In 2008, he married Seoli Mohilary in a ceremony attended by former Chief Minister (L) Tarun Gogoi and State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Mohilary was the chief of the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) before joining mainstream politics in 2003. He formed the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) party in 2005 and was elected as the president.

Mohilary recently said BJP is a communal party, and therefore, his party severed ties with the ruling party in Assam and joined hands with the Congress-led grand alliance (Mahajot) in the poll-bound state.

>>Mohilary played a crucial role in establishing the Bodoland Territorial Council on February 10, 2003, thus fulfilling the Bodo aspiration.

>>He is one of the most powerful men in Bodo in politics. He also played a significant role in the development of Bodoland.

>>Under his leadership, the Bodoland People’s Front won 12 out of 13 seats in the 2006 Assam Legislative Assembly elections.

>>Mohilary helped include the Bodo Language in Devanagari script in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution as per Articles 344 (1) and 351.

>>Relations between the BJP and BPF, which has three ministers in the council of ministers in Assam, turned bitter, and both parties fought the recently held elections to the sixth schedule council of the BTC separately.
