GANGTOK:

The Sikkim government on Monday increased the number of seats in Gangtok Municipal Corporation from 17 to 19 seats.

This comes close to the impending elections for urban local bodies in Sikkim due in early 2021.

The government has also decided to reconstitute the Gyashing Nagar Panchayat and Nayabazar-Jorethang Nagar Panchayat from its earlier status of Municipal council in the future.

Earlier, the state government had appointed Administrators for seven urban local bodies of Sikkim as the tenure of the existing heads of these bodies has ended and the municipal elections have been postponed because of the COVID-19 situation.

“During the interim period of the Administrators, all the properties vested in the Municipalities shall remain vested in the State Government.” a press release issued by the Urban Development Department stated.
