Sikkim: ICAR celebrates International Women’s Day

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Tadong celebrated International Women’s Day on March 08.

Top dignitaries from the state attended the program, including Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and others.

With the theme “Women in Leadership: Agriculture, Entrepreneur, Equality and Empowerment,” the celebration brought women from different walks of life.

74 participants attended the celebration programme including 10 Anganwadi workers, 43 farm women from Saureni, Timpyem, Assam Linzey and Nandok areas.

Joint Director of ICAR, R.K. Avasthe, chaired the event and highlighted the immense contribution made by women across different sectors.

Additional Director of the Department of Agriculture, Bina Rai, deliberated on the role of education in empowering women, developing entrepreneurs through the formation of (Self-Help Groups) for a particular agricultural commodity for self-reliance.

Extending his wishes to the women community, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said, “Women are not just mothers, sisters, and daughters, but the building blocks of our social fabric. The value of their participation in economic, political and social works should not be overlooked."
