NESO to organise sit-in protest against the killings of 14 civilians by Assam Rifles

In Meghalaya, the sit-in demonstration will be followed by a candlelight vigil at U Woh Kiang Nangbah monument near Civil Hospital, Shillong from 3 pm onwards, the NESO said.

SHILLONG: 

The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) which comprises of eight major students’ bodies from the Northeast will hold programmes in all the state capitals of Northeast as a mark of protest against the killings of 14 civilians by Assam Rifles in Mon district of Nagaland.

NESO, in a press release issued on December 6, stated that the ambush by the security forces on December 4 which resulted in the death of 14 civilians amount to crime, and therefore, the demonstration is also to show solidarity to the people of Oting village in particular and Nagaland in general.

NESO further reiterated that the Government of India should show its willingness and sincerity for peace to prevail in the Northeast by repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 (AFSPA) otherwise it will only be seen as an act of aggression and suppression of the voice of the people by using the military power at their disposal without concern for the well being of the people of the region.
