Mizoram to introduce Hmar language as a medium of instruction at primary school level

Following a High Court order, the Mizoram government has finally decided to implement the 27-year-old Hmar accord and introduce Hmar language at the primary school level from the next academic session in Mizoram. The High Court directed the Mizoram government to implement the same within a stipulated time.

The first phase of the workshop for translation of Mizo medium textbooks of class I to V in Hmar Language was held in Aizawl on Monday.

At the workshop, the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) director Laldawngliani Chawngthu said Hmar language would be introduced as a medium of instruction in all primary schools primarily within the Hmar-dominated Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) areas from the next academic session.

The director informed that Hmar medium will be introduced from classes 1-5, and all Mizo textbooks will be translated into Hmar language, adding that the government has appointed five experts from the Hmar community to undertake the task of translation.

Initially, the Hmar medium will be introduced at class-I for the first academic calendar (2022-2023) and up to class-II in the next academic session (2023-2024), the director mentioned.

She further added that the translation of class-I textbooks is scheduled to be completed by this week.
