AIZAWL:

The Mizoram government has enacted a magisterial inquiry into the collapse of a retaining wall caused by a devastating landslide in Aizawl that took place on Friday night, June 11.

An official informed that the landslide had swept away an Assam-type building at Thuampui neighbourhood located under the Bawngkawn police station area in the northeastern part of Aizawl.

As per the government order issued on Monday, Aizawl district Deputy Commissioner Lalhriatzuali Ralte has been appointed to examine whether there was any human negligence or other factors that led to the incident.

State disaster management and rehabilitation minister Lalchamliana said the government is apprehensive that it was a man-made disaster that resulted from negligence believed to be caused by the accumulation of loose soil from a construction site situated above the collapsed building.

The minister also announced Rs four lakh ex-gratia for the family members of each of the victims, which will be paid from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

This incident had led to the death of four children between the age of three and 16, while two members of the family escaped alive out of the site with injuries.
