AIZAWL:

Veteran Congressman Lalsawta has succeeded Lal Thanhawla as the president of Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).

A meeting of the MPCC held at Thanhawla's residence endorsed its earlier decision to elevate current vice-president Lalsawta to the president post, said Congress spokesperson Lallianchhunga.

The development came a few days after Thanhawla, 83, announced his decision to quit politics, after leading the state Congress for over four decades.

While Lal Thanhawla’s younger brother and former minister Lal Thanzara was made vice-president, former minister and current member of legislature, Zodintluanga was made the treasurer.

The names of the new office-bearers will be officially announced by Lal Thanhawla on December 17 during the closing of Congress Bhavan for the year 2021, the party spokesperson said.

During this function, Lal Thanhawla is likely to publicly announce his retirement from politics as well.
