After independence, the respective governments of north-eastern states have come up with their institutions for improving medical studies, which contribute immensely to the development of health facilities in the states. Pacing with the rest of the nation, the various governments of the states have built up impressive infrastructures in their areas for imparting quality education in medical field. Primarily, all the activities of the medical colleges go under the supervision of Medical Council of North-East. The top medical colleges offer both graduation and post-graduation courses. Due to quality in education, north-east has so far produced eminent doctors to serve the health-care system in India.

North-eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) — Meghalaya

NEIGRIHMS was set up as an institution for imparting Post-graduation courses in Medical science in Shilong of Meghalaya. Feeling the necessity for the elite institution like AIIMS in north-eastern states, the Ministry of Health & Family welfare decided to establish this institution. This was registered as a society on 12th January, 1987 by the Registrar of Societies. Right from the day of its inception, it has functioned as an institution imparting excellent training to the students in handling super-speciality apparatus and the latest in technology in Medical Science. As it has functioned excellently over the years, it received the rare distinction of being the "Centre of excellence" in the world of medical fraternity on 3rd January, 2007 by the Parliament of India. Presently offering various courses at graduation, Post-graduation, and Post-Doctoral levels, the institution has now a rare status in India and abroad as a Medical College.

Regional Institute of Medical Science, Lamphelpat, Imphal — Manipur

The Regional Institute of Medical Science came in to existence in the year 1972. Popular as Regional College of Medical Science, its campus is situated in the beautiful landscape of Lamphelpat of Manipur. As an institution, it has always achieved outstanding reputation for imparting quality education. As its affairs are under the management of "North Eastern Regional College Society", the institute has the massive 1074 bedded hospital-cum-teaching faculty. It has a total capacity of seats for 100 under-graduates, 145 post-graduates, and 6 for diploma students.

 Assam Medical College — Assam

Dr. John Berry White was the first British surgeon in India, who set up the first medical school in Assam. Named as "Berry White Medical School", the institution came up at Dibrugarh in the year 1898-99. After independence, this institution became "Assam Medical College". Till today, this college remains the top-most institution in teaching medical science to students. Right from the days of its inception, the college has produced more than 7500 medical graduates. At present, it could accommodate up to 170 students in MBBS every year. During the existence of six decades, it has played a praiseworthy role of giving treatment to millions of needy patients.

 Regional Institute of Paramedical & Nursing Sciences, Zemabawk, Aizawl — Mizoram

 As para-medical and nursing services are vital in every type of medical treatment, the Regional Institute of Paramedical & Nursing Sciences was set up during the period 1994-95. Functioning under the autonomous body North Eastern Council (NEC), it has continued to serve the needs of the patients in all the North-Eastern States. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has duly taken up the absolute control of this institute from April, 2007.

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Gangtok — Sikkim

The foundation of Sikkim Manipal University was laid with the sole intention of bridging the gap between education and skill development.  Being the first-ever private and government initiative, this has achieved the distinction of being the UGC recognized private university. The MBBS and BDS courses offered by this University have the reputation for excellence in quality in imparting teaching to the students.

 Agartala Government Medical College — Tripura

The Agartala Government Medical College has its campus inside the new premises of G.B. Pant Hospital. It has the state-of-the-art laboratories, lecture rooms, libraries, common room and other facilities for its every student. Approved and recognized by the Medical Council of India, the College also has the affiliation from Tripura University.

Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH), Tezpur — Assam

Being the oldest institution in giving service to the mental patients, this institution has the biggest campus located on 81 acres of plot inside Tezpur in Sonitpur district of Assam. As the pioneering institution in giving academic courses in Psychiatry, Psychiatry nursing, and Psychiatric social work, it has played a major role in providing psychiatric treatment to the people of North-east.
