SHILLONG:

After almost a year without a president, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday appointed Lok Sabha MP from Shillong, Vincent H Pala as the new party chief of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).

His appointment as the Meghalaya Congress president came as a surprise as for the past few months, the fight for the top post was supposedly between Nongthymmai MLA, Charles Pyngrope, and East Shillong legislator, Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh.

Soon after his appointment, Pala, in a telephonic conversation with The Northeast Today (TNT), said that the focus of the party will be the 2023 general elections. “We will have to make sure that we come back to power in 2023 and for that, I have to form a good team first,” he said, adding that the team will have an unbeatable combination of both young and old.

Besides Pala, the AICC has appointed Ampareen Lyngdoh, Marthon Sangma, and James Lyngdoh as the working presidents.

Notably, the tenure of the former state party president, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh, had ended in December 2020, and the MPCC was without a chief ever since.
