Amidst the surge of COVID-19 cases in the country and the state of Meghalaya in particular, and with various stakeholders busy containing the spread of the disease, this has led the counterpart state of Assam to infringe into interruption of implementation of the centrally sponsored scheme at one of the border villages in Meghalaya.

The fresh intrusion of the officials from Assam along with an Assam based NGO was reported at Jatalong village in Ri-Bhoi District.

The incident reportedly occurred on April 29, 2021.

Speaking to TNT-The Northeast Today, Jatalong Secretary Shnong Proming Surong, informed that, the village authority after being sanctioned with the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme (JJM) started the implementation work in the village. Few representatives of the Karbi Students Association (KSA), firstly hindered the implementation of the scheme claiming that the land belongs to Assam but the village authority opposed and resumed the work.

He also informed that it was on April 29 that KSA members returned back to the village along with the Forest Department officials, and opposed the implementation of the scheme stating that the land belonged to the Assam Forest Department.

Surong added that the village authority has reported the incident to the Border Magistrate and the District Administration in order to take up the matter at the earliest.
