SHILLONG | AUGUST 3, 2020:

A well known Khasi singer, Kong Margaret Pohrmen, 58 years, died in Shillong yesterday, 2nd July.

Late Margaret was indeed an inspiration to many, who also has her name imprinted as one of the senior-most artists from the region to have featured in the first Khasi cassette album named "Jingkieng Ksiar" in the year 1982.

The veteran artist worked with All India Radio (AIR) and has produced many compositions, which may be called "the dawn of western fusion" in the acoustic sounding songs that often resonated from AIR in the 1980s.

Phyrnai Marbaniang, one of the most well-known Khasi songwriters, recalled back that "Margaret was indeed a pioneer in the scene of western fusion. She and her sister Mary gave a different outlook on the musical scenario and were much like the "ABBA" very soothing and unfamiliar, which was usually dominated by acoustic sounding numbers back then.

"Being the torchbearer for the dawn of a new era in the musical scenario, I am deeply saddened by the news of her demise. It is indeed a great loss for the music fraternity, my prayers and condolences go out to the bereaved family, may she find solace and comfort," added Phyrnai.

Among many of her compositions are, Namar jong phi, Mariang ba phylla, Ieid ianga, Daei Ngan Siew kylliang, Aiom rupa, and wan sha nga.

The veteran singer was laid to rest with honor and reverence at Laitumkhrah Catholic Church cemetery, at 2:00 pm today.
